on the right is your status panel. this shows information about you. it also shows any messages you've received. when the people you follow do things like release a work or update their profile, you'll get a message about it. this is also where you log out of the site.

Example of the icon used to select a status to update. you can also update what music you're listening to, what you're reading and what's currently on your mind by clicking on the edit control. your statuses will be shown whenever another user views your profile.

August has been hot, humid and generally just swampy in and around Washington, DC. It's way more comfortable indoors than out, which is good because it gave us a chance to do a lot of work on and add a lot of new features to Gavagai!

Besides just some housekeeping that you probably wouldn't notice, we've also added a handy pop-up help service that gives information about every page. The help for a given page can be accessed by clicking on the "?" tab wherever it's available. Hopefully this will help clear up any confusion about how to use a page and what all the icons mean.

We also added some features that you definitely won't notice on the site but that you might if you Google (or otherwise search) for your public content on the site. We added some search engine optimizations to make sure you and your works get the recognition they deserve!

The most obvious new feature is the addition of private messages. Private messages can be sent to other users by clicking on the envelope icon next to a user's name. This will open a little pop-up to send a brief message (255 characters or less) to that user. The message will then appear in the target user's "messages" list on the user sidebar. Requiring that the message be short may seem like a pain, but we wanted to have a way to talk privately up and running as soon as possible. Integrating the private messages with other status messages made the most sense, and the size limit was to keep a single message from taking up a lot of space on the messages list. We're planning to get some chat features and integration with email later this year, so this is just to make sure there's a way to communicate in the meantime.

The final and most obvious new feature is the space to add a user "bio." It may seem funny, but there were a lot of things to consider about doing this. In any case, it's available now on the profile edit page.

That about sums it up without wallowing in all the technical dirt. Happy August (last day of August, anyway). We'll see you in September!
