Drum and bass is a form of electronic dance music that began in the UK in the early 1990s, and came into its own in the middle part of that decade. It is characterized by fast tempos (160+ BPM) and often a 2/4 snare hit. It's more a way of doing things than a style in and of itself, however. It is entirely possible to have one D&B piece that sounds totally different from another, with different instruments, arrangements, and styles.
